Rivers of the World

Hello my name is Caoimhin O' Doherty I am in year 9.I was chosen to be in the rivers of the world project becausem I had one of the 4 highest grades in my class, I am 13 years old. So far we have met the Artist Darra and a teacher in your school, also I have worked on a plaster and clay model that shows a symbol of Derry. My model was a picture of fish and the site of the buildings in the distance. We've been told that next month we will colour the models using a quite an amazing method. We had to collect images of the Foyle and draw 4 images of something in Derry too, although it is definitley a good idea for our school I am finding it very enjoyable working with dara and getting out of class, doing fun activities and drawing pictures. I would like to know what you are doing in England and what you are making over there, bye.

Rivers of the world

I am currently participating in the rivers of the world project. Our river is called the River Foyle which is situated in Derry, Northern Ireland. The project we are doing is based on life on the river. The river is very important to us in Derry because we all use it. There are two bridges which many people cross every day to get to work or for some other reason, we call these the Craigavon bridge and the Foyle bridge. Most people tend to call the Foyle Bridge the new bridge for it has only recently been built. There is currently a new bridge under construction which will be called the peace bridge. This is a foot bridge and it is called the peace bridge because it is supposed to be bringing together the two communities on each side of the river. I myself use the bridge on a weekly basis. There are twenty of us in a group and we have each made a plaster tablet. We did this by getting a piece of clay and drawing a design on it. Then we cut into it to make it make it 3D. We have to cut into it because when pour plaster into it will stand out. When this is done we will link them all together to make a big sculpture. We will then make another sculpture for displayed in our school St. Columbs College which is named after St. Columba who is the founder of Derry. There is a statue of him outside our schools doors. I was chosen for the Rivers project because I had one of the highest art grades in my class. First we had a day out to Ebrington where we talked about the project and the different topics like Resourceful River and River of Life. The next time we saw the artist, Dara, he told us about what our school would be doing for the project, and showed us some pictures of other work he’s done. We also met a teacher from one of the schools from England that’s in the project. First we made plaster tablets based around Derry and Saint Colmcille as well as the River Foyle. My one had an oak leaf and a dove, symbols of Derry, Colmcille and our school, a Celtic design and a river with some fish in it. I am quite pleased with the way it turned out. Soon we are going to paint them. We are also going to make a big statue of Colmcille sailing up the River Foyle in a boat with his followers, and we’re going to decorate the outside of the boat with pictures from our plaster. So far I have really enjoyed the project.

Mark Gorman 9G. Hello, my name is Mark Gorman, I was selected out of around 250 people for ‘THE RIVERS OF THE WORLD,’ project in Derry, Ireland because I got one of the highest art grades in my class. I live in Derry in the Northwest of Northern Ireland and my house is quite near the River Foyle. So far we have met the Artist Darra and Morris a teacher in your school; also I have worked on a plaster and clay model that shows a symbol of Derry. My model was a picture of St Columb on a boat arriving in Derry. We have recently put on a coloured finish. We have also been offered to go canoeing in the River Foyle or go fishing, as a result of our hard work. We had to collect images of the Foyle and draw 4 images of something in Derry too, although there is a lot of work involved in this project, I am finding it hard not to enjoy it, getting out of class, doing fun activities and drawing pictures. I would like to know what you are doing in England and what you are making over there. Do you live near the Thames?

River Project- Eoin McElhinney 9A

River’s Project. River Foyle. Hello, my name is Eoin McElhinney 9A and I am part of the St Columb's College team on the rivers project. First we went to Ebrington to get told what we would be doing over the next two years on this project. On that day we found out who our artist was going to be and what we would be doing the project on. We were told that our artists name was Darra and that we would be working around the River Foyle and coming up with ideas about a resourceful river. After about a week our artist, Darra, came to our school and we began to make our little clay tablets and put our own designs and drawings on them. We then had to make clay walls to put around our tablets so that the plaster didn’t pour out of the sides. We have painted them and now have them finished it was great fun.

River Foyle Hello my name is Andrew Ross. I am in the River Project representing St. Columbs College. Over the past few lessons we have been working on our project with our artist Dara. At first we went to Ebrington Barracks (An old army site) which is over the River Foyle. They told us about the project and the history of our city. We then sketched out our ideas that are associated with the river and i decided to do a rower rowing along the River Foyle with the Guildhall behind him. I was chosen from 250 people. I am just after painting my clay model...It's looking good. I live close to the River Foyle, it is a beautiful sight. My model is nearly finished. Bye

River Project

Hello my name is Peter Madden and I am part of the Rivers of the World project. My hometown is Derry and its river is called the Foyle. I am working with a group of 20 other students who are the top in their Art class. I myself would regularly use the river as I have to cross it to get to school. For our project we started with the topic of the “Resourceful River” and we have already made some clay work based on the topic. You could pick anything related to the topic to draw in clay and I picked Emigration. After the Great Famine many people left Ireland and even after that and one of the main ports to leave from would be the Foyle’s. So after doing a few practice drawings I decided to draw an Emigration ship leaving Derry. It was great fun drawing in the clay but it was really difficult. To give the clay piece a 3D effect I dug out a lot of the clay that was inside the ship and in surrounding buildings so that the shapes would rise up after the plaster had been put in. After making sure we have finished with our picture we built walls around the clay so that the plaster wouldn’t overflow or go over the table. The most nervous part then was waiting for the plaster to set but in the end I was very happy with my work. We are now planning to create a sculpture of some sort.

Re: Rivers of the World

Hello, my name is Disha and I'm a student in year 9. I was also chosen to be in the Rivers of the World Project, I enjoyed the workshop. The first day, we went to Central London to see where our work would be displayed, we also did alot of sight-seeing and later went on a boat trip. The second day, we met two artists who helped us in our project. The first thing we did was to make bricks with different types of spices and herbs. We also drew a few parts of ropes on a normal paper, we traced on lino and the next we made a lino print by spreading ink on top. We also made different types of fruits and vegetables out of plasticine. The artists took pictures of our work and used to finish the project off. Please reply saying what different methods you used to colour your models.

Thank you, bye.

Rivers of the world project The river foyle Hello my name is Jack Lafferty; I am participating in the rivers project for St Columbs College. In the last couple of lessons with our artist Dara we have done a clay modal of our thumbnail drawing. We made the modal out of clay; the modal that we had to do was very detailed and very time consuming. It had taken us about two and a half hours to complete the modal. Our artist is very helpful and sound. When we had finished our modal we had to cast them, to cast them we used a type of plaster. The plaster was very quick to set it only took about 10 minutes. Once the plaster had set then we had to remove the clay to ravel the plaster modal. All of our modals had come out very well all the little details where very vivid and could be seen easily. Then once we had taken out the plaster we had to clean them up because of the residue left behind after we had taken off the clay, removing the residue was quite easy all we had to do was get a stiff brush and brush away the residue. In the lessons to come we hope to wash the plaster with paint, in this process all you do is get some watered down pigment and splash it on then remove it. By doing this the pigment will catch on to the plaster and show up some of the textures on the plaster. My thoughts of the project so far have been that it has been very educational and fun.

Hi, my name is Martin Canning and i am a member of the Rivers Of The World project. So far we have met the artist "Dara". With him, we drew into plaster casts to give them a 3D affect when fired, which we then coated with a black, red and gold  colour to give it an old effect. I went with 3 pupils from my school on canoeing trip, I think it was to get ous closer to the project. It was great fun. We are now starting the final sculpture of three men standing up on a boat going up the River Foyle
